Hollywood Celebrities: Basic Things You’ve Always Wanted to Know, Volume 1 by Sati Achath

Hollywood Celebrities: Basic Things You’ve Always Wanted to Know, Volume 1 by Sati Achath combines facts about celebrities with caricatures. Achath, known for being a quarter-finalist on NBC’s 2008 America’s Got Talent and being featured on The Late Show with David Letterman, shows off his artistic talent with his intriguing artwork. The book contains facts such as awards each celeb has been nominated for (Golden Globes, Oscars, etc.), where they went to school, and family information along with other basic info and special factoids. Some of the celebrities included in volume one are: George Clooney, Goldie Hawn, Jennifer Lopez, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, and Nicole Kidman among others.

There’s no dishy gossip or controversy here, rather you see astrological signs and the educational backgrounds of your favorite stars. This is a great book for T.V. and movie fans who find they often can’t recall which movies and awards their favorites got nominated for over the years.

The illustrations are unique and interesting. The caricatures of Daniel Craig and DeNiro are especially noteworthy. Achath has a talent for capturing the eyes and bone structure of his subjects.

Hollywood Celebrities: Basic Things You’ve Always Wanted to Know, Volume 1 is an intriguing look at many of the Hollywood heavy hitters. A fun read for any fan of pop culture.

Skinnydipping: A Novel by Bethenny Frankel with Eve Adamson

Skinnydipping by Bethenny Frankel with Eve Adamson tells the story of a young woman, Faith, who is straight out of college and goes to California to pursue her dream of show business and to reconnect with her distant father. Faith begins hanging out with her father’s younger girlfriend, Brooke, and is introduced to the L.A. party scene. She meets actors, actresses, producers, and sees a sleazy side to the world of celebrities.  Throughout her less than successful acting auditions, we see Faith doing what she does best: baking.

Faith gets her heart broken in California and then we see her, five years into the future after another big break up, down on her luck, and trying to get a baked good business going. She gets an opportunity to audition for a reality television show called Domestic Goddess. This part of the book is where Frankel’s confident and outspoken attitude really come into play. We see her personality come to light as we read about Faith’s audition where she mocks a contestant’s fake Chanel purse and catches the producers’ attention. Faith joins the reality show competition and is pitted against others in an attempt to win a chance at getting her own cooking show. The contest, much like the Donald Trump show, The Apprentice, is run by a Martha Stewart type, Sybil Hunter, who has her own empire and, as it happens, a hot son who is interested in Faith.

The book really takes off when Faith becomes involved in the reality show. The dialogue between Faith and the other contestants is funny and quick and the book manages to showcase all of the contestants’ personalities so you feel as if you’re getting a behind the scenes peek at an actual show.  Although the fact she knows three people involved with the show seems a bit contrived, the tension of having her fall for the “domestic goddess’s” son is intriguing and the snappy dialogue really keep the story moving.

Fans of Frankel will enjoy the novel and the outspoken, take-no-b.s. style of Faith. This is a fun, read that takes you into Faith’s gritty life of trying to muscle her way into the L.A. celebrity lifestyle as well as making it in a tough market be in acting, marketing and baking her way to the top or reality T.V. Skinnydipping is a fun and intriguing read from the outspoken and always entertaining Frankel.

Tris and Izzie by Mette Ivie Harrison

This story is billed as a retelling of the legend of Tristan and Isolde, which I have always found fascinating. However, I have yet to find a retelling that is truly satisfying. A recent film version proved disappointing and boring, despite starring James Franco as Tristan. Still, I had high hopes for this book. A…

This Body of Death by Elizabeth George

This is the perfect example of how to create quagmire in a story which most readers do not want. The main characters investigate a death and try to figure out who did what along the way. Okay, great premise as I love these kinds of stories. So, where did this one go wrong? Well, instead…

The Jumbee by Pamela Keyes

This is my first review with A&A. I post regularly on Goodreads (when migraines aren’t striking) and try to keep that site updated with where I am when I read, so you’ll often see that I have multiple books in progress because not every book has the ability to suck me in completely and my…

Supreme Justice by Phillip Margolin

This was one of the hardest stories for me to complete because it was just that: a story. Aren’t all stories just stories? Um…no… What sets apart other novels from stories like this are emotional connections to characters. Supreme Justice did not offer any. Sure, it defined characters, but they were flat. What also makes…

The Screaming Season by Nancy Holder

This is book 3 in Nancy’s Possesions series. If you want to dig into the series after reading this review, be sure to read the books in order: Possessions (Book 1), The Evil Within (Book 2) and The Screaming Season (Book 3). The Screaming Season is a great continuation of the tale started in Possessions. While…

Centerpieces by Penelope Przekop: A Review

When I first decided to read this book, I did so based upon the fact that it had an interesting premise, a unique story to tell. That is one of the main criteria I use for picking many of the books I decide to read. It has to engage me in some way. Since I…
